Designing Empathic Connections for Streamer-Viewer Experience in Community-Based Live Streaming

“Empathic design embedded in live streaming interaction offers various possibilities to creating naturalness in conversation, emotional resonance between streamer and viewer during simultaneous remote communication, and sense of presence through social dynamic experience. The current live streaming space offers asynchronous interaction through live chat and gifting, limiting gesture-based reactions conveyed in direct communication to flow within the space. Accordingly, viewer becomes the only benefitted side from the experience, with streamer speculates viewer’s intention from the text sent through live chat which is not able to translate nonverbal reactions during live stream.

Purpose of the Research:
This research aims to develop emotional interaction between streamer and viewer to allow natural expressiveness and social engagement in the community. The efficacy of experience flow will be assessed through emotional connection and mental models of sociability in the live streaming space. At the end, this research seeks to design a unified service interface embedded with empathy cues which are substantial in the experience to support the flow of emotional feedback from viewer to streamer in the community-based live streaming.

Career Prospects:
I would like to pursue a career as a researcher and a designer focusing on leveraging community engagement in the industry. I aim to work in the entertainment industry in Japan.”
